"There is an age-old saying, “Old keys won’t open new doors.” But perhaps old doors open to wisdom that is new to us, becoming a catalyst for unexpected ideas and possibilities… To be a master is to exhibit the highest proficiency at something ~ a trade, a skill, an art form. It can be a long journey, one requiring hard work, deep study, practice, and recovering from failures. We learn the rules so that we can go beyond them, down constructive, artistic roads, leading to a unique version of our craft or philosophy. We often think of a master as a person. But what if it isn’t? Who, or what, are our teachers? " Elizabeth Ladwig
"The Master" portrays a surreal and dreamlike scene. The central figure is a young girl seen from behind, stepping barefoot up a staircase set in a grassy outdoor landscape. She wears a flowing pink dress with the back featuring lace detailing. In her hand are three oversized, antique keys that hang heavily towards the ground. The staircase leads up towards a solitary leafless tree set atop a small hill, under a soft, cloud-dotted sky. Adding elements of movement and life to the otherwise still scene, three birds are depicted in flight above the tree. To the right of the staircase, standing on the grass is a deer which enhances the sense of mystique and fantasy within the work. The texture and color treatment give the composition a timeless feel, lending the entire piece a quality that invites interpretation and contemplation.
