The fever breaks and the air lifts. It’s coming time for homemade soups, evening fires, cozy sweaters. We pick whatever apples the deer couldn't reach and gift them to family and friends in the form of crisps and German apple cakes, and the house is saturated with sweetness. Autumn festivities are alive with cheer against a backdrop of fiery leaves… distracting me from the slow wane of the season. I make a batch of nectar for the hummingbirds, as I have for the last 20 weeks, but the feeder is still full. Their silent departure reminds me that others will leave too, and the wildlife is preparing to den down. As the morning alarm sounds, barely a glimmer shines through the window now. In another blink, the trees will be skeletal. Still it’s my favorite time of year. The Earth has generously provided for us for another season. In the wake of her exhaustion, colorful offerings are left behind as if to say “Remember me. Take care of me while I sleep.” The sun falls, earlier each day, and the owl sings a lullaby.
