ABOUT KIRK ALLAN
From a young age, Kirk Allan’s journey with wood began when his father handed him a chainsaw at the young age of 15. Since then, his fascination with the natural world and its raw materials has steadily grown, shaping his path as an artist. He uses various types of wood, resin, and pigments to create functional tables and charcuterie boards, each piece standing as a testament to the blend of nature and craftsmanship. His work emphasizes the unique characteristics of each wood slab, from its cut to its color, layering it with resin and pigment to craft a compelling narrative of form and function.
The contrast between the smooth finish of the resin and the organic texture of the natural wood is a central theme in his work. This combination of man-made refinement and natural beauty draws him to create pieces that are not only functional but also aesthetically engaging. His background in landscaping, particularly influenced by the distinctive beauty of Arizona’s nature, continually inspires him to explore and experiment with wood from all over the world.
Each piece of wood he selects tells its own story, whether it's through the nuances of its grain, the intricacies of its coloration, or the unique way it is cut. His process involves layering these organic elements with resins, resulting in creations that are both original and evocative. Through his art, he aims to highlight the inherent beauty of wood, transforming it into pieces that spark dialogue and admiration. Ultimately, his work is a celebration of the harmony between natural imperfections and human creativity. Every piece he creates is an exploration of this delicate balance, inviting others to appreciate the intricate, often overlooked, details of the materials that surround us.
