JENNY GUMMERSALL
ABOUT JENNY GUMMERSALL
Jenny’s love of Art began at a very early age. She studied Art and received degrees from Columbia College and The University of New Mexico. Her education continued in her twenties when she traded her car for a place in the late famed wildlife artist Libby Berry’s New Renaissance Academy. With these learned skills, she expanded her Art through travels in Europe, with many great museum visits including to the Musuem Ludwig in Cologne Germany where her mentor the late Dr. Reinhold Misselbeck was an Art curator. Many trips to the Print & Drawing Study Room at the Art Institute of Chicago inspired and educated. Her love and study of Maynard Dixon while attending University of New Mexico furthered her interests in the West. Spending time with her Artist husband in the LA Art world where he was on the board of Art/LA in the early ‘90s, Jenny gained contemporary art experience.
Living on ranches in Southwest Colorado for over 25 years along with her travels have added to her love of the West. Jenny and her husband Greg’s “Ranch Families: Culture of America” exhibition in 2001 forwarded her interest in communicating this important heritage. Numerous exhibits at museums and galleries followed. She was honored to be invited to show her Art in The Coors Western Invitational and the Desert Caballeros Museum’s “Cowgirls With A Camera” Invitational. Feature articles in respected publications followed (including Southwest Art, Cowboys & Indians magazine) have attested to her special eye. In addition, Jenny’s Art is included in many fine private and corporate art collections (including the Saks Fifth Avenue Houston Flagship Art Collection, The new Omni Hotel in Nashville where the Country Music Hall of Fame also resides, Residence at the Little Nell in Aspen).
With Jenny Gummersall’s experience, technical abilities, and enthusiasm she creates much for us all to enjoy with her Fine Art.
“I want my art to be a place where the viewer can enter and be within my artistic creation of the West. This unique and varied landscape of The American West; the land, the light, the man-made routes, the people, the animals and expansive skies have influenced my art greatly. I hope my observations and affinity for ranch life values are apparent in my work. Sharing this with viewers is my goal.”
Jenny Gummersall’s work depicts familiar icons presented in a contemporary Americana-style that offers her unique vision of the West.
From her earliest days in the darkroom, she has “studied” life with a keen eye for the normal being transformed into the unusual. Her images of horses, landscapes and natural objects may be playful, sublime or endearing, and are always inspired by an interest in capturing the illuminated forms found in her environment.
For decades, Gummersall’s photographic work has been exhibited by galleries and collected throughout the U.S. and abroad by private individuals, corporations and museums including the Tucson Museum of Art, Nashville’s Omni Hotel, Saks Fifth Ave Houston Galleria, Nestles’ Corporation and The Residences at The Little Nell in Aspen. Magazines featuring her work include Cowboys & Indians, Southwest Art, The Briar Cliff Review and Oxford American Magazine.
A graduate of the University of New Mexico and Columbia College, she lives and creates with her artist husband, C. Gregory Gummersall, on a ranch near Durango, Colorado.
