About Tonia Royston
Tonia Royston is an artist whose journey has been intricately woven through a tapestry of diverse creative disciplines, culminating in her distinctive abstract mixed-media collages. Born and raised in the verdant landscapes of Marin County, California, Tonia was enveloped by a family of distinguished artists, each contributing a unique thread to her artistic DNA. Her father, a renowned landscape architect, and her mother, a dress designer, along with her siblings—a jeweler and an abstract painter—fostered an environment rich in creativity and innovative thinking. This familial legacy of artistry became the fertile ground from which Tonia's own artistic voice emerged.
Her artistic evolution took a winding path, beginning with studies in weaving under Ida Grae in the early 1970s, which laid the foundation for her appreciation of texture and form. Tonia's pursuit of a BA in music from the University of San Francisco further expanded her artistic sensibilities. Her time in New York was marked by a foray into the culinary arts, where she trained as a pastry chef at the Institute of Culinary Education. These diverse experiences, coupled with her mosaic studies with Edith Heath in the 1990s, have all contributed to the unique approach Tonia brings to her artwork today.
The Covid-19 pandemic marked a turning point in Tonia's creative journey, giving rise to her current body of work—abstract mixed-media collages on paper. Her pieces are a symphony of shapes and colors, inspired by the natural world she adores. Utilizing a variety of materials including acrylic paint, fiber, brass and copper sheet metal, and precious metal leaf, Tonia constructs landscapes that are both dreamlike and dynamic. She views art as a dialogue with nature, an opportunity to assemble organic shapes into harmonious compositions that resonate with the viewer on a deeply personal level.
Tonia Royston continues to thrive within the vibrant art community of the San Francisco Bay Area, where she finds both inspiration and the opportunity to contribute creatively. Her work, which has been showcased at prestigious venues such as the UCSF National Center of Excellence in Women's Health, invites audiences to engage with the art in their own unique way. As she looks to the future, Tonia aspires to see her art cherished in homes, offering moments of reflection and joy to those who encounter it. Her journey is a testament to the belief that creativity knows no bounds, and that every artistic endeavor is an adventure waiting to unfold.
