About Slawek Jan Wisniewski
Slawek Jan Wisniewski is a dynamic and introspective artist whose journey from Poland to the sun-soaked landscapes of Van Nuys, California, has been one of rich cultural infusion and personal evolution. Born in Poland, Wisniewski arrived in the United States as a political refugee in 1989, with a two-year interlude in Greece that added another layer to his diverse experiences. His early career as a respiratory critical care specialist at the University Hospital/USC gave him a profound understanding of human nature, which deeply informs his artistic practice today.
Entirely self-taught, Wisniewski's artistry is anchored in the expressive power of oil paints on canvas. His style has evolved from surrealism to expressionism, allowing him to explore broader emotional landscapes. He is particularly known for his use of Yves Klein Blue, a vivid hue that defies traditional boundaries to blend sky, earth, and ocean into a singular, cohesive vision. This unique approach reflects his fascination with themes of time and the enduring human spirit, presenting a narrative of humanity's persistent journey through history.
Wisniewski's work is layered with textures and textual elements, where spontaneous scribbles and lines of poetry become integral components of his compositions. These elements displace literal references, inviting viewers to engage with the emotive undercurrents of his work. His paintings serve as a dialogue between the past and present, offering a window into the persistence of life through history and the complexities of human behavior.
Throughout his career, Wisniewski has exhibited extensively in Los Angeles, including notable appearances at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Barnsdall Art Park, where he received an honorable mention. He continues to be an active member of both the Professional Artist Association in the U.S.A and the Związek Plastyków Artystów Rzeczpospolitej Polskiej in Poland. His unwavering commitment to painting is evident as he strives to create pieces that resonate on a personal and universal level, maintaining a lifelong pursuit of artistic dialogue and exploration.
