About Sarah Simmerman
Sarah Simmerman is a contemporary fine artist whose work explores the interplay of contrasting elements. Based in Surprise, Arizona, her journey into the art world began in Northern Virginia, where early exposure to painting classes laid a strong creative foundation. Sarah pursued a BFA in Graphic Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design, delving into various artistic media and art history. Initially flourishing in design and digital marketing, a return to painting rekindled her passion, leading her to develop a distinctive, self-taught style.
Sarah's artistic practice is rooted in abstract painting, engaging with the tension between opposites—order and chaos, structure and flow, light and shadow. Her work currently spans four unique collections, each exploring different emotional landscapes. "A Journey Within" juxtaposes precise geometric shapes with luminous, layered backgrounds, while "Cosmic Realms" allows color to arc and spiral freely. "Chromatic Odyssey" features richly textured surfaces crafted with a palette knife, and "Strength in Shadows" offers a raw, high-contrast exploration of personal struggles with depression and anxiety. Additionally, Sarah is working on a new collection that promises to further expand her exploration of emotional and visual themes.
Her exhibitions extend across the Phoenix area and beyond, including solo shows at ASU Gammage and the University of Arizona Biomedical Campus. She has participated in duo and juried exhibitions in various states, earning accolades such as First Place at the GFA Pop Up at Blick Glendale and an Award of Excellence in the Scottsdale Artists League Statewide Competition. Committed to evolving her artistic style through continual experimentation, Sarah is also dedicated to nurturing the arts community. As a board member at Ground Floor Artists, she plays a pivotal role in supporting and uplifting fellow creatives.
In her artistic philosophy, Sarah views art as a transformative element within a space, capable of shifting the energy and mood of a room. This belief permeates her creative process, as she considers the emotional impact her work will have on viewers. Through her paintings, Sarah strives to create pieces that resonate deeply, providing comfort, energy, or a moment of reflection. Her long-term goals include expanding her collector base, furthering her artistic exploration, and giving back to the arts community by mentoring future artists.
