Robert Fogel, an abstract minimalist artist based in Edmond, Oklahoma, transforms his fascination with nature into striking visual narratives. His work, which often features a few bold lines and dominant forms, is inspired by the serpentine paths of meandering streams and the geometric shapes of rugged terrains. Fogel's creations are marked by a keen appreciation for the natural world's color contrasts and the interplay of shadows that highlight textures and surface forms. His artistic vision is firmly rooted in abstract representation, with his pieces often reflecting the deserts and mountains that characterize the landscapes he seeks to depict.
Self-taught, Fogel's artistic journey began in earnest after retiring from a distinguished career as the Emeritus Lewis E. and Elaine Prince Wehmeyer Professor in Fungal Taxonomy and an Emeritus Professor of Biology at the University of Michigan. This late start did not hinder his ability to make a mark in the art world; instead, it fueled his curiosity and desire to explore new ways of creating. Fogel meticulously constructs his artworks from painted wood polygons, which are laser-cut and fastened to wood panels to create shaped paintings and wall sculptures. His process often involves initial sketches, digital refinement using CAD software, and the integration of varied materials, such as clear acrylic and patinated steel, to bring his visions to life.
Fogel's work has been celebrated in numerous exhibitions and has garnered several prestigious awards, reflecting his growing influence in the art community. He has participated in over 60 juried exhibitions and held three solo shows. Notable accolades include the 2019 Ursula Seuss Abstract Award from the Tubac Center of the Arts and the 2016 Ann Connelly Fine Art Award at Forum 35’s Art Melt in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His distinction as a Shreveport Regional Arts Council Collectible Artist in 2017 and an "Oklahoma Visionaries: The Beginnings" artist in 2023 further cements his status as a formidable presence in contemporary art.
Committed to both artistic excellence and environmental education, Fogel aspires to continue refining his craft while raising awareness about the Great Basin's ecology. Through his art, he aims to educate viewers on the biological, geological, and human impacts on this unique landscape, addressing issues such as mining, fire, overgrazing, and the effects of infrastructure and immigration.
