About Patrick Cosgrove
Patrick Cosgrove is an esteemed artist whose work captures the profound interplay between nature and human presence. Rooted deeply in the landscapes of Northern California and residing in Davis, California, Cosgrove has dedicated over four decades to exploring the varied terrains from the Bay Area to the Central Valley. He draws inspiration from the undulating farmland and dynamic coastlines, encapsulating the tension between exploited landscapes and untouched beauty, offering viewers a serene escape into the natural world amidst modern life's chaos.
Cosgrove's artistic journey began in the Midwest, where he felt a sense of rootlessness that later found its anchor in the expansive topography of California. With a BFA in painting and photography and an advanced background in Film Studies from the University of Michigan, he transitioned from a career in Hollywood's film industry to teaching high school art, English, film, and photography. Now fully dedicated to his craft, he channels his experiences and academic insights into creating oil-on-canvas works that resonate with the simplicity and beauty of overlooked agricultural and coastal scenes.
Influenced by early 20th-century California landscape artists, Cosgrove employs a technique that marries impressionistic realism with modern sensibilities. Using knife and brush, he transforms ordinary moments into contemplative experiences, inviting collectors to pause and rediscover the tranquility of existence. Each piece is a testament to his love for the landscape and his enduring relationship with his surroundings, offering a visual narrative of connection and belonging.
Cosgrove's work has been widely recognized, earning accolades such as the People's Choice Award at the YoloArts.org Art and Ag auction and multiple honors at the LightSpace & Time Online Art Gallery. His work is held in private collections and annually raises funds for Public Television through their Art Auction, as well as supporting galleries throughout Northern California. He remains committed to sharing the quiet beauty of his art with a growing community of collectors, fostering a deeper connection to the shared earth. His paintings serve as a reminder to find grace in the everyday and to cherish the landscapes we inhabit.
