Lars Finderup is a sculptor based in Marietta, Georgia, whose artistic journey is deeply rooted in the scenic landscapes of his native Denmark. Born and raised amidst the serene beauty of beaches, meadows, and woodlands, Lars developed an early appreciation for form and design. This passion was further ignited at age 12 during a visit to Le Corbusier’s Notre Dame du Haut chapel in Ronchamp, France, an experience that left an indelible impression on him and set him on a path toward art and architecture. With a Master's Degree from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Lars initially pursued a successful career in architecture, honing his skills in design and spatial aesthetics.
However, the constraints of architectural practice could not contain Lars's creative spirit forever. Driven by a desire for artistic freedom and expression, he transitioned to sculpture, where he found the liberty to explore themes of movement, emotion, and the human experience. His work navigates the delicate boundary between figuration and abstraction, often using the human form as a canvas to delve into deeper narratives. His current series, "Window," exemplifies this exploration by using fragments of the human figure to frame and transform the viewer's perspective, while his earlier series, "Caress," abstracts the human form to capture the essence of tactile gestures.
Lars’s sculptures are crafted through a meticulous process, beginning with live figure work in clay or plaster, which is then molded and cast in cold cast or solid bronze. This traditional technique is augmented by his architectural background, allowing him to infuse each piece with a unique blend of classical form and contemporary abstraction. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including the Metro Montage series at the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art and the Decatur Arts Festival, where he has consistently captivated audiences with his sophisticated approach to sculpture.
