About Katie Moirs

Katie Moirs is a dedicated and dynamic visual artist based in Waterford, Connecticut, whose journey from cognitive psychologist to painter enriches her exploration of the human condition through art. Growing up on a potato farm in northern Maine, Katie's formative years were steeped in values of hard work and community—a foundation that continues to inform her discipline and collaborative spirit in the art world. Her initial fascination with watercolors became a gateway to a broader artistic pursuit, deeply influenced by the works of John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, and Charles Reid. Through self-study and formal training with master artists like Scott Waddell, Katie honed her skills in both watercolor and oil painting, embracing classical techniques while maintaining a contemporary sensibility.

Katie's work is characterized by thematic collections that delve into the essence of what it means to be human. Her "Being Human" series invites viewers to connect with the universal emotions portrayed in her portraits, transcending cultural and linguistic barriers. Meanwhile, the "Blue Space" series captures the serene beauty of oceanic landscapes, encouraging a momentary escape into tranquility and calm. Currently, she is expanding her thematic repertoire with projects focused on women's movement and expression, as well as capturing the vibrant life of New London, CT, through sketches and paintings. Her methodical approach to watercolor—mixing colors directly on paper and allowing the medium's inherent unpredictability to guide her process—mirrors life's own ebb and flow, a metaphor she embraces wholeheartedly.

With a Ph.D. in educational and cognitive psychology, Katie brings a unique perspective to her art, viewing it as both a personal journey and a pedagogical tool. Her academic background informs her teaching philosophy, emphasizing foundational skills that enable artists to express their unique voices. Katie's accolades, including a first-place win in the Wethersfield Academy for the Arts Double Juried Art Challenge, underscore her technical skill and emotional insight, qualities that resonate deeply in her work.

Katie is committed to continuous growth, both personally and professionally, as she seeks to refine her artistic voice and expand her reach. Beyond her individual practice, she is passionate about giving back to the community, whether through teaching, storytelling in her art-inspired newsletter, or finding ways to support charitable causes through her artwork. As she delves into tai chi, Katie is intrigued by the potential intersections of psychology, art, and this meditative practice, a convergence that promises to further enrich her creative output.
