About Josef-Peter Römer

Josef-Peter Römer is a distinguished artist whose journey from Dohna/Sachsen, Germany to the United States has profoundly influenced his narrative figurative style. Born in East Germany, Römer's early life was marked by a diverse array of cultural and personal experiences that would later manifest in his art. After serving in the military, he relocated to the United States, where he pursued a formal education in Fine Arts at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, graduating with a BA in Painting and Printmaking. Römer's artistic path is also enriched by a significant decade-long sojourn in Europe, where he worked as a designer and apprenticed under the esteemed German sculptor Ludwig Seibert.

Römer's work is characterized by its narrative depth, drawing from a rich tapestry of dreams, personal experiences, and both historical and contemporary events. His approach defies conventional perspective and focal points, inviting viewers to engage with the entire composition as the central subject. His primary mediums, oil on canvas and Masonite panels, serve as the vehicles through which he conveys his complex interpretations of the world around him. Römer's inspirations are eclectic, from the accomplishments of past and present artists to the immediacy of current events, all of which propel him to continue exploring and expressing through his art.

Throughout his career, Römer has been recognized in numerous group and solo exhibitions, showcasing his work across the United States and internationally. Notable appearances include the Museum of Wisconsin Art and NYC's Equity Gallery, among others. His art has garnered prestigious awards, including a First Place/Gold Medal at the 2020 Regional Creative Arts Festival Competition in Tomah, Wisconsin, and recognition at the 2017 Artists Equity Invitational Exhibit in New York City. These accolades underscore Römer's commitment to his craft and his ability to resonate with audiences through his evocative storytelling.

Römer currently resides in Galesville, Wisconsin, where he continues to paint and draw inspiration from his multifaceted life experiences, including his unique connection to American Indian culture, a heritage he honors in his work. His long-term goal remains a testament to his passion: to sustain a livelihood through his art, allowing him to perpetually engage with the creative process that has defined his life's journey.
