About James Wimberg

James Wimberg, an innovative artist residing in Torrance, California, has carved a distinctive path in the realm of mixed media art. Raised in the picturesque town of Old Lyme, Connecticut, Wimberg's artistic journey began in high school with exploratory "photo safaris" that honed his early talent for capturing the interplay of light and composition in natural settings. These formative experiences led him to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking at the University of Connecticut, where he deepened his understanding of visual storytelling through formal training in photography.

After graduating in 1978, Wimberg relocated to Los Angeles to cultivate a career in commercial and fine art photography. Over the years, he established himself in the competitive world of advertising photography, all while nurturing a passion for artistic exploration. As his commercial endeavors began to wind down, Wimberg embraced the pandemic lockdown as an opportunity to delve into the world of analog collage. This medium provided him a fresh canvas to explore new dimensions of creativity, blending photography with graphic elements such as charts, maps, and type to create compelling visual narratives.

Wimberg's work is characterized by a unique synthesis of "on the grid" compositions, where biomorphic shapes meet linear forms, creating a dynamic tension that invites viewers to contemplate themes such as the objectification of women in advertising, memory, and the passage of time. Drawing inspiration from the beautiful decay of wabi-sabi, the grit of urban street art, and refined aesthetics, Wimberg's collages resonate with both balance and complexity. His artistic influences include luminaries like Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Heinecken, Cecil Touchon, and David Carson, whose works inspire him to continually push the boundaries of his own creative practice.

As Wimberg looks toward the future, his aspirations include expanding the scale and thematic depth of his mixed media artworks. His recent transition from commercial photography to personal artistic pursuits has been met with enthusiasm from galleries and peers alike. With a commitment to innovation and a desire to create art that speaks to both himself and his audience, James Wimberg continues to evolve as an artist whose work invites introspection and dialogue.
