About Alain Hentschel
Alain Hentschel, an American artist residing in Palatka, Florida, draws upon a rich tapestry of experiences from both his personal and professional life to create evocative works that resonate with natural and metaphysical themes. Born in the icy climes of Manchester, New Hampshire, and later transplanted to the sunlit shores of California, Hentschel's early fascination with the ocean set the stage for a lifelong exploration of the beauty and complexity of nature. These formative experiences are evident in his artistic process, which often incorporates broad washes of acrylics on canvas, capturing the essence of natural phenomena from hurricanes to floral blooms.
Hentschel's artistic journey took a significant turn after earning a master's degree in painting and drawing from California State University, Long Beach. Embarking on an odyssey of discovery, he traveled to Greece, where the melding of sea and ancient history enriched his creative vision. His travels eventually led him to Paris, a city that would become a pivotal chapter in his life. With a French-born mother, Hentschel found Paris both familiar and invigorating, allowing him to immerse himself in the city's vibrant art scene. This period was marked by notable exhibitions, including prestigious showings at the Grand Palais and the Mona Bismarck Foundation, which indelibly shaped his artistic identity.
During his 24-year tenure in Paris, Hentschel played a crucial role in shaping future artists as the Director of Parsons Paris for the Parsons School of Design. His leadership and vision not only nurtured a new generation of creatives but also deepened his own understanding of the artistic process. Following his move to the United States, Hentschel continued to impact the art community through academic leadership roles, culminating in his position as Dean of the Florida School of the Arts, where he served until his retirement in 2021.
Now in a period of reflection and unfettered creativity, Hentschel's work continues to evolve, fueled by his passion for spirituality and scientific exploration. His canvases often challenge traditional perspectives, inviting viewers to contemplate alternate realities and the symbiotic relationships within the natural world. As an artist dedicated to expanding his reach and sharing his vision, Hentschel remains committed to exhibiting his work and engaging with audiences worldwide, perpetually inspired by the landscapes and seascapes that have long captured his imagination.
